Operation New Bathroom: The Reveal

3 Mar

Our new guest bathroom is finally complete! Its been a labor of love and we did every single thing in this room ourselves except for the electrical rldrk, so we are especially proud.

Before we show all the after pictures, let’s reminiscence about how it looked when we moved in.

Pink bathroom beforeWe demo’d it completely soon after and started from a clean slate.

And now here is our brand new guest bathroom!

IMG_2647Since the last bathroom update, we added our DIY towel ladder (step-by-step here) and decorated the vanity with baskets, towels, etc. We also added pulls to the top to look like a drawer.

IMG_2672We hung a couple large wooden keys above the toilet and added a little tray over the toilet which holds a blue Ball jar full of cotton swabs, a candle and some shells. We brought in a little bit of Ben’s homeland with the kina shells from New Zealand.

Ben installed a beautiful new window and we hung an inside mount bamboo shade from Home Depot.

Just for fun, I put together this little collage of all of the little details of the room.

Bathroom collageWe’re so happy with the way everything turned out, and are even happier to call the first space at 12 Oaks D-O-N-E!

If you want to see how we got to the big bathroom reveal, check out Part I (drywall, tile backer, lights), Part II (tile, grout, wood wall planks) and Part III (vanity, trim, sconces, fixtures).

Finally, I wanted to share a big ole source list, including paint and grout colors, for anyone who is wondering where to get anything.

Wall paint: Benjamin Moore’s Palladian Blue; floor tile: white marble from Home Depot, tub/shower tile: white subway tile from Home Depot, vanity (including marble top): Home Depot/Decorators (also available on Amazon here); faucet: Delta from plumbingdepot.com; shower curtain: Kohls; light fixtures and “hidden” fan: Home Depot; towel ladder: DIYed for $16 (here’s how); toilet: Glacier Bay from Home Depot; mirror: Home Decorators; floor mat: World Market; bamboo blinds: Home Depot; bathtub/shower fixtures: Delta from Home Depot; grout: Mapei’s Frost color; baskets and over toilet tray: World Market; faux flowers: World Market; soap pump: Target; Ball jar: Antique find from Lake Geneva, WI; flower vase: TJ Maxx (similar one from World Market); tissue holder: Home Goods; clam shell: Fiji from our honeymoon; starfish: Michaels; wooden keys: Grandinroad; sconces (including vintage light bulbs and glass shades): Lowe’s; striped towels: Pottery Barn; white and gray towels: Target; glass canister set: Crate & Barrel; white pot and faux plant: Ikea; toilet paper holder: Moen from Plumbing Depot; kina shells: New Zealand; window: Studio 41; curved shower rod: Home Depot.

I think that covers about everything. Now on to the next million projects which include the last spare bedroom which was being used as a work zone for the bathroom, new windows, taking out the main wall in the living room and an addition. Yup, big plans.

This is absolutely gorgeous. I have been looking for a bathroom with a tiled bath and panelling on the walls. I would love to have a bit more info on how they work together. Is the tile flush with the panelling, or is it out further? Did you add the panelling on top of existing walls or just on the studs? If the tile is not flush with the panelling; does the panelling run underneath the tile a bit? Sorry for the million questions!

    • 12oaksblog August 22, 2014 at 7:27 am #

Thanks Emilie. It isn’t perfectly flush so we put a 1×2 piece of wood vertically between the edge of the two. We ran panelling on top of drywall but you don’t need to I just changed my mind after it was already hung.

Oh my! Look at the before picture of the bathroom. In the mid 80’s, I bought my first house. It had pink tile exactly like this. At the time, dusty mauves and dusty blues were the shit! Anyway, I had white wall paper with dusty blue and mauve butterflies to go with it. I loved it THEN! Anyway, now it is
2014, I met someone who is living in my old house. She was talking about some horrible, horrible wallpaper and pink tile. I knew exactly which house she was speaking of. Apparently there has not been one update since I moved out in 1990. Her friend is now renting the house and probably puking daily. Love the updates you made!

What type of wood did you use and how did you cover up your drain pipes? My husband wants to make us this vanity in our bathroom.

    • 12oaksblog November 1, 2014 at 5:51 pm #

The vanity is store bought from Home Decorators. The drain pipes are exposed.

I am looking for sconces just like these, do you remember name and price so I may find them at lowes? Also name of glass covers so I can look for them? Thank you and great job!

  5. Natalie March 11, 2015 at 5:30 am #

Hi! Your bathroom is my inspiration for our current bathroom Reno. I’m curious… We bought the same sconces but when we installed them the rings where the bulb screws into are white and don’t look as pretty as yours. Do you know if you purchased something separate for it? I’ll have to send you a picture of ours when it’s done. Thanks!

    • 12oaksblog March 11, 2015 at 11:07 am #

I think we spray painted them to match.

  6. Morgan McMullen April 9, 2015 at 9:38 am #

I posted about bathrooms I am loving today on my blog and shared a link to this gorgeous bathroom you created. This is a great remodel and I really love the colors that you went with and the vanity is amazing! I hope you will stop by and check it out.

    • 12oaksblog April 9, 2015 at 9:42 am #

      Thanks Morgan that is awesome.

  7. renee130 May 1, 2015 at 10:13 pm #

Where did you get the shower curtain rod?

  8. Erin June 11, 2015 at 11:13 am #

Love, love, love the vanity. I’m wondering how it has held up? Would you buy it again?

    • 12oaksblog June 11, 2015 at 11:13 am #

Yep it has held up perfectly. Highly recommend.

      • Beth June 27, 2016 at 5:37 pm #

Awesome!! Was this all for under 5k?

  9. steph July 22, 2015 at 1:51 pm #

Hi! Love the remodel! You didn’t list where you bought your vanity, which is the one thing I’ve yet to pick for my new bathroom. I really like yours! Thank you in advance!

  10. Deede Dore August 26, 2015 at 12:39 pm #

I ‘m in the process of a complete Reno on my lake house. And boy some days it has kicked my hinny. I’m installing the exact vanity mine is double ( I got a great deal) in the guest bath now. I have tiled the floor and working on the tub surround. I’m constantly looking for the best deal out there. ex: vanity $1,000, pd $250, lighting $800, pd $90. I’m going to make the ladder this week, between every thing else. I truly love my live, and GOD is great…

    • Shayna July 2, 2016 at 12:39 am #

Deede, where did you find the double vanity for so cheap!? We are in the middle of a bathroom remodel & after will start on our master & im wanting very similar vanities!

  11. joannie August 28, 2015 at 9:09 pm #

Your bathroom is AMAZING!!!!! What is the name of the shower curtain??

    • 12oaksblog August 28, 2015 at 9:42 pm #

I’m sorry I don’t have the name just know it was from Kohls a couple years ago.

  12. Rebecca September 3, 2015 at 3:11 pm #

Just came across this beautiful remodel on Pinterest, while doing research for our own remodel. Can you share the dimensions of your bathroom? We have an identical layout and would love to replicate some of your ideas but I’m not sure our space is the same.

    • 12oaksblog September 3, 2015 at 4:13 pm #

It is 7’5″ x 4’7″. Good luck with your project!

  13. Sue's South November 5, 2015 at 5:10 pm #

It’s going to look like I stole all your ideas once I’m done with my hideous bathroom, but this is almost exactly what I envisioned for my beach house! Would it be rude to ask what the total cost was?

    • 12oaksblog November 5, 2015 at 5:12 pm #

Haha cool. I don’t remember exactly and didn’t keep track but my best guess is around $5,000.

  14. backpackvon November 11, 2015 at 3:31 pm #

You said the bathroom is 7’5″ x 4’7″. I see the vanity’s width is 22″. What is the width of the bathtub?
I wasn’t blessed with the designers ability so I am duplicating your bath exactly. I hope you take that as a compliment because your bathroom is so very beautiful. After 16 years of marriage I am finally getting a second bath, praise God!

  15. Jess January 1, 2016 at 1:31 pm #

Any chance you know or have the name if the shower curtain?

    • 12oaksblog January 1, 2016 at 1:32 pm #

No sorry. I doubt they carry it anymore either.

  16. linda February 9, 2016 at 10:59 am #

I love your bathroom!!!!! I have a walnut vanity with drawers but it has a reddish tone to the wood. I want to use the bronze taps and sconces would this work,

    • 12oaksblog February 9, 2016 at 11:11 am #

Yeah I think the oil rubbed bronze fixtures can go with anything.

  17. linda February 11, 2016 at 7:58 am #

Are there any specific rules for the shape of bathroom mirrors. I saw a beautiful scalloped one which I love but not sure if it would work. I’m trying to follow everything you have done in your bathroom but I do love this mirror. Also we bought ceramic tile but it seems there is more grey than while. Will that work? Thank you so much!

    • 12oaksblog February 11, 2016 at 8:01 am #

That mirror sounds pretty. No rules just whatever you like. Grayish tile would look great. Good luck!

  18. Jeanne Clark March 15, 2016 at 8:51 pm #

Your bathroom is stunning! I tried to find the vanity but I couldn’t on their website. Do you have the name or item number? Or could you send me the link? Love to see more of your home…If I could put your bathroom in my house I would not change a thing. Thanks Jeanne

  19. Casey July 16, 2016 at 5:33 pm #

Where did you get your mirror?

  20. Kenzi August 4, 2016 at 11:01 am #

Key-shaped wall hangings was very unique, I like it. What price a decoration like that? are there other sizes?

Where did you buy the wood wall panels?

  25. Colette March 23, 2017 at 12:46 pm #

Hi! I’m a (very) late-comer, who has admired your bathroom makeover for quite a while now. We are doing similar walls (wood or MDF) in our bathroom and I have a question … do you think I could use cabinet paint on the walls? I have some left over in a color that would work. Thanks in advance!

  26. B F April 11, 2017 at 6:32 pm #

Hi! I can’t seem to find your lights that frame the mirror – looks like the source says their from home depot? Any more details? Love the space, great work! Thanks in advance for the guidance!

  27. Sarah May 27, 2017 at 6:35 pm #
