Home Sweet Home

4 Nov

We’re going on our 4th night at the house, and it’s amazing but it already feels like home. I promised some pictures of us moved in so here goes.

Here’s the living room, which is probably the farthest along of any room in the house. We still need to mount the TV, and will be adding lights in the ceiling (there are none), removing the wall that divides it from the kitchen, and re-doing the floors, but that’s about it. My favorite thing is the huge built ins. Can’t wait to decorate those bad boys for the holidays.

Here is the dining room. We will be adding shadow box molding under the chair rail, french doors where the windows are that lead out to the pool, adding a chandelier, and of course art.

On to the kitchen. This will be pretty much a full gut job. We’ll be removing the big wall on the right and adding a huge island to create an open floor plan. But for now, its not too bad.

Here is the den, which will be our cozy movie room. We will be re-doing the fireplace, the floors, adding a light fixture and painting the trim and doors white. I didn’t share the paint color in here yet. It is called “Wheat Bread” by Behr. Another greige. Yeah greige is my jam.

We haven’t moved in furniture upstairs yet because we are getting the floors done while were on our honeymoon. So we’ve just got a mattress on the floor for now. We are going with the bottom most left color. I think it is called Spice Brown.

Outside, Ben tidied up the front yard, and I decorated the front door area a little.

I LOVE this color mum.

We also got the hot tub set up. We still need to get some more chemicals, but should be able to take a dip this week.

That’s all for now. This week will be finishing painting upstairs, cleaning out the rental, demoing a bathroom, cutting down brush around the pool and building a temporary fence around it. Ben also wants to cut the grass as possible and get as much done outside before snow hits and we are buried with it for 6 months.

Let There Be Paint

It’s truly amazing what a coat of paint can do.

Exhibit A. Our scary basement went from this:

To this:

Our garage from this:

And my favorite, the living room painted 2 coats of Analytical Gray by Sherwin Williams.

Excuse the badly lit pictures, it was dark by the time I snapped the photos.

Here are a few more “afters” of the living room. We love the color, it’s a good mix of gray and beige (aka greige) and should go great with our furniture.

The problem with painting one room, it makes all the others around it look even worse!

Ben did the majority of the rolling, and I did most of the cutting in. I loved using Ben’s scaffolding to cut in on the ceiling. I call it my tight rope, but it makes it so much easier than moving the ladder every few feet.

In addition to painting those 3 rooms, we’ve also changed the locks on all the exterior doors, ripped out a moldy bathroom ceiling (and sprayed it with bleach), patched some holes in the walls, defrosted the fridge, filled some pot holes in the driveway with gravel and cleaned the place within an inch of its life.

Not bad for just 3 nights of work. Here’s a few pics of us working away.

Tomorrow morning our friend Lee is coming over to help move our stuff still in boxes and furniture that we didn’t move into the rental to the new house. Most of it will go into the garage or basement so we have room to work before we move in.

We’re also hoping to get a majority of the rest of the painting done this weekend. My Mom and brother Jared are coming on Sunday to help. Wonder what they will think of our progress so far!

Better Late Than Never

Happy homeowners

We finally closed on “12 Oaks” today! I wish I could say it was a smooth transition. Being a “short sale” (which should be called a “long sale”) with 2 different mortgages (and a lean!) on it, our closing was delayed 6 weeks, meaning we had to pack up and move into a rental house while we waited. It was pretty stressful, but the whole ordeal has made the closing of 12 Oaks even more exciting! And it’s provided a good lesson for us, that it’s not the house, but who you share it with that makes it home. Cheesy, I know, but true.

I figured I’ll start off this first blog post with all the before pictures of the house. It needs a lot of work, I mean A LOT, but we are up to the challenge (ask me this again in a couple months). A few of the things on the agenda include:

  • Renovation of 3 bathrooms
  • Remodel kitchen
  • Rehab the in-ground pool
  • Build a barn
  • Add a master addition
  • Paint and re-finish floors in the entire house
  • Eventually finish the basement
  • Build a deck and/or patio around the pool
  • Landscaping- lots of landscaping
  • Remove a wall to create an open floor plan
  • New windows and a roof

Today we started cleaning out about 2 years worth of cobwebs and dust accumulated from the house being vacant. Next will be painting and getting as much done in the next couple of weeks before we move in early November and then head off on our honeymoon.

I’m hoping this blog will help us document the entire renovation process, let friends and family keep up with our DIY adventures, serve as a creative outlet, and maybe eventually serve as inspiration to others.

So without further ado, here’s a “before” house tour:
