Home Goals 2013

21 Dec

Since there’s no better way to light a fire under your arse than a public proclamation of what you want to accomplish, here is our big ole list of what we want to achieve in 2013…

1) Put in Upstairs Hall Bathroom. This will be one of the first things we do in the New Year, since we’ve already demo’d it due to a faulty/leaky bathtub. I also already put together a mood board so we just need to get moving.

2) Re-locate laundry and renovate first floor powder room. It’s still up in the air where the washer and dryer will go at the moment, but the first floor powder room is in desperate need of a makeover. The wall color actually scares me and the sink reminds me of what would be in prison. We did hang some free cabinets Ben got from work which at least adds function and covers up some of that terrible wall color. Oh yeah, did I mention this room doesn’t even have a ceiling?

3) Take down a wall to create open floor plan. Taking down the wall between the living room and kitchen is one of the things we’re most excited about since it will totally change the feel of the first floor. It is a load bearing wall though, so we are going to consult a structural engineer to ensure we do it correctly without having the house fall over on us.

4) Along with taking out the wall, will be adding a kitchen island and renovating the kitchen completely. We’ll try to re-purpose the cabinets and the appliances are decent, but this will definately include new floors, countertops, sink, backsplash, lighting, etc.

5) New windows. Our windows are in terrible shape. Some are broken, many don’t open, and they all have these weird blue screens. BUT we’ve already got a quote on new ones, so this will probably happen as soon as the weather gets nice enough to install them.

6) Renovate Master Bathroom. Can we re-do 3 bathrooms in 1 year? I sure hope so. We want to extend the master bathroom by taking out the closet next to it to create a much roomier space.

7)  Get the pool up and running. We of course have to wait until the weather gets nicer in the Spring, but this will be a big job that includes filling cracks, waterproofing, acid washing, painting it, testing plumbing and adding new equipment. But once it’s done, I may never leave.

Pool filling up, slowly but surely

8) Build a deck and/or patio around said pool along with landscaping around it and the rest of the property. Thankfully Ben is friends with a landscape architect so he is going to put a plan together for us. It’s a big job but will make a huge difference.

9) Add french doors off of the dining room. We’ll replace these windows with french doors leading out to the deck and/or patio.

You may notice a new light fixture in the dining room. We got it from Ballard Designs a couple weeks back. The scale isn’t quite right with the table, but Ben is going to build a new dining room table with some native New Zealand wood he has, so it should work better with a bigger table.

10) Paint the house and install new front door. I’m thinking something in the gray family to go with our new roof. I still need to share pics of it which was finished a couple days ago, but it was raining or dark every time I would be able to take a pic, and now it’s covered in snow (yay, white Christmas!)

11) Update fireplace in the den. We actually got a free chunky mantle from Ben’s work so we need to install/paint that and paint the brick or add stones or wood molding to update it.

12) Add shadowbox molding in dining room and stairs. Plus, we still need to get new railings for the stairs.

13) Put in can lights in living room. We don’t have a single light in the living room so we will add can lights. We also need to update fixtures in most rooms in the house.

14) Add hardwood floors in the entry way.  These weird green and red tile will not make the cut.

I’m probably forgetting some things, but I’d say that’s plenty to keep us busy for a year. What do you say? Think we can get it all done?

Master Bedroom Tour

19 Dec

Note: Before I get into the Master Bedroom I wanted to share some thoughts on the tragic massacre in Newtown, CT last Friday. Unfortunately I was working from home that day with the TV in the background so I was glued to it for hours as the horrific details unfolded. This terrible, terrible thing has rocked our nation to its core and has, I think, made all of us question our faith in humanity. But what I have seen since has restored that faith. The love and kindness expressed from people all over the country is just amazing. One example is the movement called #26Acts, where people are doing 26 acts of kindness to honor the 26 victims. It is spreading like wildfire and I urge you to check it out and participate if you feel inspired. I did. I also truly believe that gun laws are going to change as a result. Probably not as much as many of us may hope, but even re-instituting the assault weapons ban (which I think will happen) can save innocent lives. I could go on, but we’ll leave it there.

After 6 weeks since closing and sleeping in almost every other room in the house (den, dining room, and spare bedroom), we are finally sleeping in our (mostly) complete master bedroom! It feels amazing.

So far this room has undergone new paint, re-finished floors, painted trim, new shoe molding, and new outlets and outlet covers. Plus we moved in all our furniture and hung a couple things on the walls. Voila!

And here’s the before:

The only thing missing are the doors, which are still a work in progress after the spray booth didn’t turn out as planned. Drip central. Some doors, a new ceiling fan and some decorating and this room will be done.

Here are a few sources for anyone that is interested. Our bedding is from Ballard Designs, the large mirror over the bed is from Home Decorators (I got this over half off last year around Thanksgiving), the french writing rug is from Ballard Designs, and those Mr. and Mrs. pillows were a wedding gift from our old neighbors. Aren’t they adorable? They are also from Ballard Designs. I’m seeing a trend. The bed we built ourselves a couple of years back according to some Ana White plans. The rest of the furniture in the room was Ben’s parents’ bedroom furniture which we had stripped and re-finished.

So the last time you saw the Master Bathroom it looked like this.

It wasn’t quite working for me for a few reasons:

  1. It’s super crowded. That vanity stuck out really far in an already tiny room (not to mention it was covered in seashells!)
  2. The faucet didn’t work right and
  3. There was very little storage.

Would you believe that Ben gave this room a mini-makeover while I was away in Miami as a surprise? Some women get flowers and chocolates, I get bathrooms. I’m a lucky girl.

So here it is today, complete with a new $99 vanity from Home Depot and some nice big shelves.

He also quickly painted the medicine cabinet and light, changed out the light bulbs, and ripped out the blue soap dish.

While this is all temporary until we can renovate the entire thing, it has made a huge difference! 500 brownie points for Ben.

And just for fun (my idea of fun at least), this is what it looked like on closing day.

Yeah I will take not dealing with that atrocity over flowers any day.

So what do you think of our Master so far? Also feel free to share any thoughts around Sandy Hook if you feel inclined.

Floors, Doors & More

9 Dec

Sorry for the delay in posts, I have been out of town every weekend for the past 5 weeks (Fiji for 2, Nashville, Miami for a bachelorette party, then Rockford this past weekend). I’m ready to spend some time at home and away from airports for a while.

Even though I’ve been traveling so much, lots has been going on at the house. The big thing being the floors are refinished upstairs! Not without a hiccup of course though. Our plan was to have them all done while we were on our honeymoon since you can’t walk on them for several days during the process. We came home hoping to finally move in upstairs, but they were messed up. There were bubbles throughout the top coat, so we had to wait another week until they were fixed. Meanwhile, we were sleeping in the dining room.

But alas, they are done and look great!

Here’s one of the bedrooms sans furniture.

The stairs:

Here’s a look at them when we moved in.

Stairs- Before

We still need to get new railings for the banister (several are missing), stain and paint them, and clean up the paint on the risers, but we’re almost done. We started hanging frames going up the stairs today too, so I will be back with an update later.

Here is the upstairs hallway now. Doc wanted to be in this photo.

IMG_1987

Along with new floors, Ben installed new shoe molding. The old stuff matched the floors so we bought white stuff and painted all the baseboards and trim bright white.

IMG_1986

You may notice the doors are missing. That’s because they are all in the basement in a makeshift spray booth getting sprayed with the paint sprayer. It looks pretty funny like a door graveyard.IMG_1989

Ben gave them their first coat today, so we should have them ready soon. Also still need to get new oil rubbed bronze door knobs to replace the shiny brass ones.

On the subject of doors, we scored this 1920’s exterior door yesterday at an architectural salvage yard in Rockford.

IMG_2021

We’ll put this on the front of the house and haven’t decided if we will stain it or not. They just don’t make them like this any more. This was only $140 compared to if we tried to buy something like this new it would be $1,000 or more.

We also put the Christmas tree up this week. I love it. I like to switch up the color scheme every year (God bless Ben for letting me), and this year is purple and silver. You like?

IMG_1991

IMG_1993And last but not least we welcomed a new family member this week! A new little Tuxedo kitten named Mia.

IMG_2008She is teeny tiny, just 2.5 lbs but were already fattening her up. She is SUPER cuddly and friendly and after a couple of days has warmed up to Doc. Here’s how I caught them in the kitchen today. I’d say they are going to be good friends.

Today we spent all day unpacking the rest of the boxes, hanging picture frames, moving furniture, laying down rugs and getting organized. It’s coming together. I’ll try to do an upstairs house tour soon!

Fiji Honeymoon Recap

25 Nov

After a fantastic 2 weeks away from work it’s time to re-enter the real world tomorrow AM. womp womp.

So here’s a recap of our truly phenomenal honeymoon with lots of photos!

After traveling for nearly a full day and a less than stellar flight on Air Pacific (e.g. cramped seats and no working TVs), our cares immediately melted away as we hopped on our helicopter transfer from the main land to our resort’s island, called Matanamoa. We saw a bunch of other islands and reefs on the way.

Once we landed 15 mins later, we were greeted in island style with leis, a song by the band and a fruity drink!

We went exploring around the island while we waited for our room. Oh how pasty we were at the beginning.

Here’s a quick tour of our bure (Fijian hut), which was perched right on the beach under some coconut trees.

Here’s the view out the front towards the beach. We spent many a hours lounging, reading and napping in that hammock.

There are less than 30 bures on the entire island, meaning a max of 60 guests and no children! No surprise, most people were also on their honeymoon, which made for a great time since they were all our age and liked to drink and have fun.

We spent most of the first day exploring and snorkeling. We saw a white tipped reef shark which I swear was 5 feet long but Ben says it was only 2 feet. It was actually the only shark we saw the entire time. Phew!

We actually didn’t even make it to dinner the first night, we went to take a nap and didn’t wake up until the next morning. It took a couple days to get on Fiji time.

Day 2 we spent hiking up to the top of hill on the island. It was only about 15 minutes but had some stunning views. In the distance here is Motoriki, where Tom Hanks filmed Castaway.

There were coconut trees everywhere, Ben opened one up in less than 2 minutes.

Day 3 we went on an island hopping and snorkeling tour to the Sacred Islands, which are uninhabited, and where Fijian tribes people went to escape canibalism on the main land.

Day 4 was probably our favorite of the trip as we went sport fishing with another Kiwi couple and caught some HUGE fish! A 40 lb. Mackerel, 40 lb. Grand Trevally, 15 lb. Mackerel, 5 lb. Tuna and some other smaller ones. All in less than 3 hours.

We headed out at 6am, so caught a fantastic sunrise.

The best part was having a couple of the Fijian staff members cook it up for us on the beach for lunch! (We also ate the tuna in the restaurant for dinner and lunch the following day.)

We had some beers, drank out of coconuts, ate on leaves, and learned some Fijian swear words. It was awesome.

We also toured the village where a lot of the staff live. It was pretty 3rd world, no running water, run down houses, animals running around.

The next few days we just took it easy… swimming, snorkeling, sunning, reading.

Here’s the restaurant where we ate all our meals. Dinners were wonderful, lunch and breakfast just OK. But what can you expect when they have to ship everything in daily.

Each night after dinner there were games like crab racing and Mr. & Mrs. Matanamoa, a band, and usually a big bowl of kava. Kava is a Fijian drink made from plant roots and if you drink enough, it is a hallucinogen. It looks like muddy water and makes your tongue go numb when you drink it.

We celebrated my 27th birthday on the island one day. It was a perfect day: treetop massages in the morning, beach all day, sunset and a bottle of wine, and a great dinner and birthday cake.

The final day, we went on a sailboat trip to Tom Hank’s island and a school village.  The school was really neat, the students were so full of joy and loved getting their pictures taken (and throwing up gang signs apparently).

Another chopper back to the airport and we were on our long, but oh so worth it, journey home.

But our travels didn’t stop there. A day after we got back, we headed to Nashville to Ben’s brothers for Thanksgiving and Ben’s niece and god daughter’s baptism. Isn’t Vivian the sweetest thing ever?
